heart card made with Washi paper quiltingI’ve discovered Washi Paper Quilting and made a number of cards, including this heart card that could be a Valentine if you wanted. I’ve made a video tutorial demonstrating how to make it.

I made this card (and several others) using a Washi Paper Quilting Kit from Hanko Designs.

According to the Hanko Designs web site, Japanese Washi paper is hand made and silk screened. Quilting with this beautiful paper is based on “kime-komi”, a traditional technique for making Japanese dolls.

The kit I used is called the Original Starter Pattern Kit. It contains patterns plus three sheets of thin chipboard and three sheets of quilting foam. I bought the Washi paper separately.

Here is the video tutorial.

I think you could use fine cardboard instead of the chipboard, if necessary.  Cereal boxes might work.  As for the quilting foam, I imagine a similar project might be available in a fabric shop — perhaps something used as an interface for sewing.

The Washi paper is truly beautiful. It is not the same as the origami paper you can purchase as Michaels Arts and Crafts store and other craft shops. However,  you could probably use origami paper if you can’t find the Washi version.

This  Washi Paper Quilting technique is easy to learn, fast to do and truly elegant.
